Phasmophobia update brings new maps and VR improvements

Kinetic Games has unveiled the second Quality of Life update for Phasmophobia, introducing new Restricted maps, improved Evidence collection mechanisms, VR enhancements, and additional death mechanics.

The update, now available for PC and PlayStation users, with an Xbox version planned for a future release, expands on the changes implemented in the first Quality of Life update. That initial update rolled out in July, featuring a reworked 13 Willow Street map and several gameplay improvements.

New Restricted Maps and Evidence Collection

The latest update adds condensed versions of maps for Prison, Brownstone High School, and Point Hope, aimed at speeding up investigations and increasing gameplay diversity. These new small-to-medium Restricted maps allow for more efficient exploration and variation in gaming sessions.

Improvements have been made to Evidence collection as well. Players no longer need to manually verify their findings in the in-game journal; instead, they can now identify previously logged evidence through visual cues on their Photo Camera, Video Camera, or Sound Recorder. Additionally, any Evidence choices and ghost types selected by teammates will be visible to the entire team, reducing the need for last-minute checks before proceeding with a hunt.

VR and Death Mechanics Updates

For VR users, the update delivers a more responsive character rig that enhances real-time body movement tracking. The game also addresses various bugs flagged by the community. Significant changes have been implemented concerning player deaths: when a player dies, their skin turns grey and their eyes become misty, and voice chat is disabled instantly upon death.

Kinetic Games’ Response to Player Feedback

This update follows the announcement by Kinetic Games that the full 1.0 release of Phasmophobia, originally slated for this year, has been postponed to 2027. The studio decided to defer the launch to focus on quality, following criticism of its Player Character Update. Acknowledging their shortcomings, Kinetic Games apologised to the player base, recognising that they “missed the mark” and fell short of their promises.

Numerous patches and hotfixes have been issued to rectify the issues caused by the latest update. The studio communicated its efforts to incorporate player feedback into the game, aiming to enhance the overall gameplay experience for Phasmophobia fans. “We’ve read feedback from across the entire community. The frustration and disappointment has been clear,” the team confessed.
