Fish puzzle challenge: solve the fin-tastic mystery

The solutions to a pair of intriguing fish puzzles, initially posed earlier today, have been shared. These puzzles were designed to test spatial awareness and were set under an imaginative scenario involving a fish in a tank.

First Puzzle: Detailed Solution

The first puzzle involved analysing the path of a fish swimming in a tank measuring two metres in height, one metre in width, and one metre in depth. Participants were tasked with interpreting the path as viewed from three different angles: the front, the right side, and from above. The challenge was to draw the top view of the shortest path consistent with the given front and side perspectives.

The solution required recognising that the vertical line at the start belonged to the cross section corresponding to the number “1”. The diagonal section of “7” shared the same plane, along with its horizontal segment. The final portion of the path aligned with the highlighted area in the top-right view.

Second Puzzle: Thorough Explanation

The second challenge presented a scenario where the bottom section of the fish’s path had to adhere to the shaded cross section highlighted in the top-left view. Similarly, the upper segment of the path, excluding the extreme top and central portions of the tank, had to fit within the indicated section in the centre. To achieve the minimum possible path length, there was a singular way to connect the lower and upper path sections and to complete the path within the top-right cross section view.

These cerebral exercises were crafted by maths educator George Watkins to commemorate the upcoming inauguration of the 1729 Maths School. This specialist institution, located in Mill Hill, north London, is about to welcome its inaugural students later this month. The name of the school, inspired by the legend of a London taxi cab numbered 1729, reflects its unique focus in the UK.
