Effects of prolonged private equity ownership on travel firms

Audley Travel, a renowned tailor-made tour operator valued at £482 million ($656 million), is struggling to find a buyer despite generating record profits. The company’s business model, which relies on highly skilled specialists to plan bespoke trips, has faced scrutiny as the travel industry’s direction evolves.

The financial details of Audley Travel have remained largely out of public view due to its status within a private equity framework. However, disclosures from 3i, a London-listed firm holding 48% of Audley’s shares, alongside filings from Audley’s holding company at Companies House, provide insight into the company’s earnings and ownership costs. Despite its profitable operations, these factors may be influencing its attractiveness to potential buyers.

Audley has been governed by private equity ownership since 2012, with 3i leading the investment. In October 2024, 3i engaged investment bankers to initiate a sale process, with plans for an auction set for early 2025. Nevertheless, the company has yet to secure a suitable purchaser, highlighting the complexities and challenges within the travel sector.
