Nintendo has expanded the local multiplayer capabilities of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, now allowing up to eight players to participate on a single console. This enhancement comes as part of a recent, unexpected update available for the Switch 2, alongside an array of other improvements.
On the evening of the update’s release, Nintendo announced that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is among the titles receiving free enhancements for the Switch 2. The update not only introduces the capability for up to eight-player split-screen gaming but also brings enhanced image quality and quicker load times. Furthermore, the update incorporates features such as GameShare and CameraPlay, which enable players to watch reactions, complete with colourful language, as they engage in races with two to four players.
The key innovation is certainly the expansion of the local multiplayer cap from four to eight players. This functionality requires the use of a Switch 2 console, accompanied by a Joy-Con 2 or Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. Although navigating the game on a screen divided into eight parts may present its challenges, the added chaos could contribute to the fun.
Nintendo’s patch notes also mention some additional, minor adjustments. Owners of the Booster Course Pass now have the option to set ’96 Races’ when creating custom VS matches. Moreover, the update ensures that your speed is not reduced when Boo steals an item from opponents, and all racers receive a slight speed boost, simulating an increase by “one coin.”
Beyond Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Nintendo has been actively updating other titles with improvements. Recently, Pikmin 3 Deluxe received an update offering similar graphical enhancements on the Switch 2. In contrast, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate received a minor patch aimed at improving online gameplay, but it has not yet been updated for Switch 2 compatibility.
