Volkswagen to cut 100,000 jobs following board decision

Volkswagen to Cut Additional 50,000 Jobs in Massive Workforce Overhaul

Volkswagen’s board has greenlighted a significant reduction in its workforce, approving plans to eliminate an additional 50,000 positions by 2030. This decision doubles the job cuts announced earlier this year, bringing the total number to 100,000 by the end of the decade.

The Volkswagen group, which encompasses brands like Audi, Porsche, and Skoda, had previously stated in March their intention to slash 50,000 jobs. Now, the company is accelerating its efforts amidst a challenging financial landscape and intensifying competition from Chinese car manufacturers.

CEO Oliver Blume expressed the strategic importance of these measures, describing them as a “strong signal” for the company’s future. He emphasized Volkswagen’s commitment to managing their responsibilities towards their global workforce, a sentiment he shared during a conversation with the BBC in July when hinting at the potential for further reductions.

The company, employing over 660,000 individuals worldwide as of 2025, cited the need for a “fundamental adjustment of the global workforce capability” to maintain competitiveness amid changing market demands and technological advances.

Volkswagen’s formal statement outlined that the reduction will include managerial roles across the group, highlighting the depth of the organisational changes required.
