Double Fine Productions is ready to launch its first independent title since parting ways with Xbox. The game, titled Thank You Bus Driver, is described as a comedic simulation experience and is currently listed as “coming soon” on Steam.
Gameplay and Features
Thank You Bus Driver immerses players in the life of a “reckless” bus driver, pushing them to “drive fast, slap faster, and eject rulebreakers” to achieve the ultimate accolade: appreciation. The game offers unique challenges such as navigating city streets and rural shortcuts, all while avoiding—or not—obstacles like pedestrians, traffic, and fences.
Pre-Order Availability
Fans eager to embrace the mayhem can pre-order the game now on both Steam and GOG.
Transition to Independence
Double Fine’s journey to this new chapter follows a significant organisational restructuring by Xbox that was announced in July. The reorganisation, led by CEO Asha Sharma, impacted approximately 3,200 positions across the division. As a result, Double Fine and other studios like Compulsion Games found themselves returning to independent status, taking along their intellectual property and back catalogues.
Impact on the Team
The restructuring meant a reduction in staffing numbers at Double Fine, with around 25% of their 90 employees laid off. The decision, according to the company, was part of “reaching a size that we can sustain” post-independence.
