Signet Jewelers has emerged from the second quarter with a notable profit, pivoting from a loss of over $9 million in the previous year’s second quarter to a net profit exceeding $52 million. This positive shift has prompted the company to enhance its fiscal 2027 outlook, aligning with its strong performance in the first half of the year.
Website Relaunches and Credit Agreement
In an effort to reinforce its market position, Signet has revamped its Jared and Kay brand websites, with promising initial outcomes, as indicated by CEO J.K. Symancyk during a recent analyst call. Additionally, the Zales website is scheduled for a relaunch later this month. This digital transformation aims to bolster customer engagement through enhanced visuals, improved navigation, and live video features.
Signet’s partnership with Bread Financial has been renewed until 2035, including a new profit-sharing deal projected to bring in over $1 billion. This agreement is set to boost Signet’s financials, with $80 million expected in cash from this quarter’s partnership agreement and an anticipated operating benefit between $200 million to $250 million over the next three years.
Financial Performance and Outlook
During the second quarter, Signet achieved a 2.2% growth in same-store sales compared to the previous year. Although total sales dipped slightly to $1.5 billion, the company recorded a gross margin of $602.4 million, equating to more than 39% of sales – an increase of 80 basis points, partly due to approximate $15 million in tariff refunds.
The company’s improved performance has led to a 10% increase in their annual adjusted earnings per share guidance. Factors contributing to this adjustment include operating advancements, share buybacks, the favourable tariff refunds, and the terms of the new consumer credit agreement, according to Joan Hilson, the Chief Operating and Financial Officer.
Projected total sales for the year remain between $6.7 billion and $6.9 billion, while the outlook for same-store sales has improved to a range of flat to up 2.5%, as opposed to the previous estimate ranging from nearly a 1% decrease to a 2.5% increase.
Analyst Perspective
Jefferies analysts, led by Randal Konik, highlighted the “quality” of the quarter in a note made public on Wednesday. They emphasized that Signet delivered positive comparable sales across all fine jewellery brands, with a 6% increase in average unit retail, and saw better-than-expected margins due to efficient cost management. CEO Symancyk noted that these improvements set a solid foundation for the crucial upcoming holiday period.
