Palladium prioritises seagrass alongside coral restoration

Palladium Hotel Group has shifted its marine conservation efforts by focusing on the preservation of the seagrass ecosystem instead of coral restoration. This initiative is housed at the Grand Palladium Select Palace Ibiza, where they have established a marine conservation laboratory.

New Focus on Seagrass Conservation

Visitors to the resort in Ibiza can now access a seagrass nursery and participate in dives to observe the ongoing conservation work. This initiative aims to highlight the significance of the island’s marine ecosystem, particularly the role of seagrass.

The Role and Importance of Seagrass

Seagrass plays a vital role in the marine environment. It functions as a natural water filter by capturing suspended particles that cloud the water. Additionally, it is a significant carbon sink, storing up to 18% of the ocean’s carbon. The seagrass beds also provide habitat and nourishment for countless marine organisms.

Challenges Due to Climate Change

The stability of these crucial ecosystems is at risk from climate change impacts such as rising sea temperatures. Coastal hotels and resorts have historically benefited from the allure of their natural surroundings—clear waters and white sands—often promoted by destination marketing organisations. These natural features rely heavily on healthy coral and seagrass ecosystems.

This initiative by Palladium Hotel Group is part of a broader conservation strategy, which, despite its importance, is currently being funded by their foundation rather than directly from operational budgets.
