Valve plans for Steam Deck 2 not yet finalised

Valve Deliberates on Timing for Steam Deck 2

Valve is in the process of determining the optimal timing for the release of its next-generation Steam Deck handheld gaming device. As of now, there is no confirmation on when a Steam Deck 2 will launch, and the development seems contingent on acquiring the right processing chip.

Valve’s designer, Pierre-Loup Griffais, revealed in a discussion with IGN that the company is still working out when and how to develop the Steam Deck 2. Valve remains focused on maintaining a balance between performance, cost, and efficiency, like the original Steam Deck, and does not intend to compromise power efficiency and battery life in pursuit of better performance. Griffais has previously expressed the need for a performance “leap,” though such advancements may not be feasible for a couple of more years.

At the beginning of the year, Griffais hinted that Valve was busy working on a successor to the Steam Deck, but specific timelines were not disclosed, possibly as a result of market caution due to component shortages. Despite this, Griffais assured that current hardware shortages do not heavily influence Valve’s considerations regarding the Steam Deck 2’s development.

The main challenge the company faces is identifying the appropriate future chip to power the Steam Deck 2. This chip choice will determine the design and build of the device that houses it. Although Intel’s Panther Lake chip appears close to achieving the desired “generational leap,” its high price may hinder its adoption. Nonetheless, Valve is likely evaluating future options from companies like Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm to achieve its performance goals without inflating costs excessively.
