Amazon invests $230M in Whole Foods employee benefits

Amazon has committed to a substantial investment exceeding $230 million to enhance the pay, benefits, and support programs for employees at Whole Foods Market, as part of its initiative to integrate the specialty grocer more fully within its operations.

Compensation and Benefits Enhancements

Commencing 28 September, Whole Foods employees will experience salary hikes, with scheduled yearly increases, while from 1 January all employees will have access to Amazon’s extensive benefits. Amazon reported that after these changes, the average total pay for Whole Foods store staff will exceed $29 per hour, with full-time workers seeing an over 75% increase in benefit value.

Eligible full-time employees starting next year will enjoy comprehensive health plans, featuring $5 copays for primary care and behavioural health services. Additionally, they will have a One Medical membership, offering complementary same-day and virtual doctor consultations. Approximately 20,000 part-time employees will be offered dental and vision insurance, alongside complimentary basic life insurance.

Comprehensive Family and Health Support

Amazon emphasised that this package will benefit families and those managing ongoing health concerns significantly. Employees will receive fully company-funded short- and long-term disability insurance. Further enhancements include fertility and family-building care, cancer support, and care navigation, provided when employees enrol in an Amazon health plan. Parental leave benefits have been expanded to include up to 20 weeks for birthing parents and as much as six weeks for supportive or adoptive parents.

To further improve employee benefits, all hourly Whole Foods workers will enjoy complimentary Amazon Prime memberships, discounted prescriptions via Amazon Pharmacy, and other savings opportunities, adding to their existing 20% discount in-store. The Career Choice initiative, which finances college tuition, skills training, and certifications, will also be extended to Whole Foods employees in the coming year.

Integration Journey and Future Plans

Since mid-2025, Amazon has been progressively integrating its leadership and benefits structures with those of Whole Foods. This included a significant restructuring of its Worldwide Grocery division, incorporating Whole Foods executives in June 2025, and setting a December 2026 target to unify corporate staff benefits and compensation between the two entities.
