United to pass on full jet fuel costs, industry premium trend

United Airlines is confident in its plan to offset jet fuel costs through fare adjustments, despite facing recent spikes in fuel prices. This assurance comes from the company’s chief financial officer, Michael Leskinen, who shared insights during the Morgan Stanley Laguna investor conference.

Offsetting Fuel Costs

Leskinen expressed optimism that United Airlines could recover the entirety of its jet fuel expenses by year-end. Despite a sharp increase in fuel prices, about 35% of tickets for the fourth quarter are already booked at existing rates, he noted, which limits immediate repricing options. However, Leskinen underscored a strategic time lag in pricing adjustments that will eventually facilitate full cost recovery.

Strategy and Pricing

According to Leskinen, the airline anticipates no changes in their ability to pass fuel costs onto customers through airfare. By leveraging demand for premium seats and amenities such as advanced inflight internet services like Starlink, United plans to manage these costs effectively.
