Low-cost airlines seek tax break due to rising fuel costs

The aviation sector is confronting challenges as surging jet fuel prices strain particularly the ultra-low-cost carriers. Unlike major airlines, these smaller carriers find it difficult to adjust ticket prices enough to cover the increased costs, with little expectation of intervention from Congress.

Impact on Low-Cost Airlines

As jet fuel prices escalate, ultra-low-cost airlines such as Allegiant, Frontier Airlines, Avelo Air, and Breeze Airways—represented by the Association of Value Airlines (AVA)—are struggling more than their larger counterparts. The executives from these airlines express concern over their limited flexibility to hike fares without losing their core customer base, who expect affordability.

Congressional Reaction

The AVA has appealed to various congressional offices in recent weeks, hoping to garner support for relief measures amid rising operational costs. However, Jonathon Freye, the executive director of the AVA, revealed that there has been no positive response or indication from Congress that it would consider implementing any supportive legislation. Freye underscored the widespread concern about maintaining affordable transportation, affecting not only their customers but also those of larger carriers.

Lack of Legislative Response

Despite the challenges, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has not responded to requests for comment regarding potential legislative relief. This lack of action leaves low-cost carriers in a precarious position, as they navigate the increased financial pressures stemming from higher fuel prices.
