Rockstar Games is once again at the centre of a leak controversy, with reports indicating a nearly 200GB leak of files that includes the source code for GTA 5, potential plans for a Liberty City DLC, and early development files from GTA 6. This data dump, totalling around 192GB, recently appeared online, and fans are diligently sifting through the trove to uncover content that never made it into the final game releases.
Exploring Lost Content
The leaked files are said to consist of cut dialogue, shelved missions, and unused assets, along with an early sketch of GTA 6’s map. Perhaps most intriguing, however, are the pieces referred to as remnants of a Grand Theft Auto 5 expansion set in Liberty City. YouTuber TJGM provided a glimpse of this proposed DLC by sharing the outline of the Liberty City map as viewed through CodeWalker, a modding tool, revealing a landmass larger than what players saw in GTA 4.
TJGM clarified that the visuals shared online were not direct screenshots from the leaked files but rather images generated using CodeWalker. He affirmed the legitimacy of the leaked documents, mentioning other Rockstar internal resources that were among the files.
Liberty City and Unfulfilled Ambitions
The re-emergence of Liberty City in these leaks has reignited interest in an expansion that seemed well along the development path before being abandoned. A screenshot purportedly showing Liberty City within the GTA 5 engine, allegedly from a Rockstar artist’s portfolio, has been shared among fans as additional proof of the canned expansion.
Speculation suggests that the Liberty City DLC might reappear as part of GTA 6 content, but no concrete evidence supports this theory at present.
The Unseen Dreams of GTA 5
Over the years, several potential DLCs for GTA 5 have been discussed, yet never materialised. One such shelved project involved a “James Bond Trevor” storyline, featuring Trevor Philips going undercover for the government. According to actor Steven Ogg, Rockstar had even begun work on this storyline before redirecting focus to the highly successful GTA Online.
Joseph Rubino, a former senior camera artist and digital cinematographer for the studio, provided insight into the Agent Trevor DLC plans, noting the division of teams to work on both the DLC and GTA Online. Rubino expressed disappointment over the decision to prioritise GTA Online due to its success, which ultimately sidelined the standalone DLC. Some materials related to the Agent Trevor concept were reportedly among the recently leaked files, though the extent of these materials remains undiscovered.
