Waymo Collaborates with Visa for New Transit Rewards Initiative
Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company under Alphabet Inc., has joined forces with Visa to launch a transit rewards programme aimed at encouraging the use of its robotaxi services alongside public transportation. As part of this initiative, Waymo will provide a $2.85 credit on future rides for customers who take a Waymo trip and use a Visa card within two hours of utilising public transit.
Programme Debuts in the San Francisco-Bay Area
This latest discount venture is initially available to residents of the San Francisco-Bay Area. The programme is designed to incentivise commuters to integrate Waymo services with existing public transit options, such as buses and trains. Customers who use a Visa card to pay for both services will automatically receive the credit applied to their account.
Lessons from Previous Efforts and Role of Visa
Waymo previously piloted similar programmes in San Francisco in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2025. The current iteration differs by incorporating Visa, which enables Waymo to verify the concurrent use of its services and public transportation through payment tracking.
Building on Public Transit Systems
This approach is inspired by the region’s existing public transit transfer discount, which leverages the tap-to-pay Clipper card system. This system offers fare reductions to passengers using various forms of public transit, including buses and light rail.
Adam Lenz, Waymo’s head of sustainability and environment, emphasised the goal of the programme being to enhance access to public transit. “Shared mobility is a team effort,” he stated. “Waymo’s autonomous services can facilitate easier integration with public transportation networks, benefiting commuters and tourists alike.”
Addressing Concerns and Future Plans
However, some experts voice concerns that autonomous services could detract from public transit usage, possibly reducing bus and train frequencies. Most rideshare users prefer direct routes, potentially bypassing complex transit systems. To address these concerns, Waymo is also introducing dedicated robotaxi staging areas at Caltrain stations to minimise wait times for passengers.
Waymo plans to assess the programme’s effectiveness and expand both the discount initiative and the robotaxi staging spaces to additional cities, continually aiming to enhance the synergy between autonomous services and public transit.
