Waymo is once again offering a discount to customers utilising their autonomous vehicles in conjunction with public transport, this time partnering with Visa. The new initiative aims to enhance connectivity with public transport by providing a $2.85 credit to those who use a Visa card to pay for a Waymo ride within two hours of using public transit.
Launch in San Francisco-Bay Area
The program has been introduced initially in the San Francisco-Bay Area. Riders who choose to synchronise their travel by using both public transit and Waymo within a two-hour window can benefit from the discount. This credit will appear automatically in their account for use on future journeys with Waymo.
Partnership and Verification
The collaboration with Visa allows Waymo to accurately track and verify customer payments for robotaxi and public transit rides taken in quick succession. This is not the first such initiative by Waymo; similar programs were trialled earlier in San Francisco in 2024 and in Los Angeles in 2025. However, the current program leverages Visa’s payment processing capabilities to ensure seamless discount application.
Integrated Transit Solutions
This incentive mirrors existing public transport discounts, utilising the SFMTA’s tap-to-pay Clipper card system. Adam Lenz, Waymo’s head of sustainability, stated that this initiative supports “shared mobility” by making public transit systems more accessible through Waymo’s autonomous service.
Addressing Critics’ Concerns
While some experts express concerns that autonomous vehicle services like Waymo could potentially decrease public transport usage, leading to reduced service levels, Waymo reports that more than half of their customers in key cities also use public transport. This data supports their claim of being a complementary service to buses and trains.
Enhancing Commuter Experience
In a bid to improve the commuting experience, Waymo has also introduced designated robotaxi staging areas at Caltrain stations to minimise waiting times for passengers. The company plans to expand these efforts, encompassing both the discount program and the dedicated staging areas, to additional cities.
