During his address at the Skift Global Forum in New York City, Mark Hoplamazian, Chairman, President, and CEO of Hyatt, underscored the significance of maintaining an owner’s perspective even as the company engages with pushback from hotel owners over various costs and fees. This perspective has been integral to Hyatt’s operations as the company has a long history of owning its hotels, which shapes its approach to challenges and decision-making.
A Legacy of Ownership
For nearly its entire existence, spanning close to 70 years, Hyatt has operated as the largest owner of its properties. This ownership model meant that, like every hotel in its portfolio, Hyatt faced identical challenges when the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Hoplamazian highlighted that Hyatt initially estimated a break-even point for some of its larger hotels at 43% occupancy, a figure they managed to reduce significantly to 22% within half a year of the crisis.
Collaboration with Partners
In the spirit of partnership, Hyatt invited Host Hotels, its largest third-party owner, to collaborate more closely by sharing comprehensive strategies and insights to navigate the pandemic’s challenges. This gesture underscored Hyatt’s commitment to its partners, demonstrating a willingness to jointly tackle industry adversities.
The Value of Insight
Hoplamazian insists that understanding the responsibilities and perspectives of ownership allows Hyatt to better engage with and respond to the needs of its partners. This strategic perspective enables the company to tackle operational challenges proactively, reflecting a deep commitment to sustaining viable hotel management and ownership models.
