TJX CEO says distribution model ready for El Niño

The CEO of TJX Companies, Ernie Herrman, expressed confidence in the company’s ability to manage weather-related challenges such as El Niño due to its distribution strategy during a Q2 earnings call on August 19. The off-price retailer’s model involves holding inventory in warehouses before it is distributed to stores, allowing TJX to adapt to unexpected weather patterns.

Flexible Warehousing Approach

Herman highlighted that by maintaining liquidity and shipping control within its warehouses, TJX can better respond to adverse weather compared to conventional retailers. This method permits the company to stage goods and wait for optimal conditions before dispatching inventory to stores, mitigating risks from unforeseen weather events.

This approach leverages the hold and flow model, where goods are stored in warehouses and released based on current data, including weather forecasts and sales trends. This method contrasts with the flow-through, or cross-dock model, where products move quickly from suppliers through distribution centers to the market.

Adaptability in Inventory Management

Dheera Anand, partner at Bain and Co., explained that the hold and flow system allows retailers to adjust based on real-time data and incoming weather reports. Goods can be gradually distributed to locations where demand is buoyant and conditions are favourable.

Anand also noted that the choice of inventory model often depends on the nature of the products. Seasonal items and high-fashion goods, which experience more variability, are suited for the hold and flow strategy, while more predictable items align with the flow-through model.

Some retailers adopt a hybrid approach, integrating elements of both models to tailor their supply chain strategies effectively.
