Developers can now claim credits on MobyGames database

MobyGames has introduced a premium subscription tier enabling video game developers to claim their contributions and build personalised portfolios on the platform. The new service, named MobyGames Professional, will allow developers to verify game credits and customise personal pages. It was initially launched in beta in June, with the completed version expected this autumn.

During a conversation at Gamescom, product manager Reece Denzel revealed that the response has been overwhelmingly positive, with “thousands of developers” already participating. The service incorporates a verification system ensuring that user identity is confirmed, though it does not allow for modification of existing credit listings.

Verification and Claiming of Developer Credits

The verification process is designed to authenticate users, thus preventing manipulation of established credit listings. Denzel explained that this process has remained stable and consistent, even after Atari’s acquisition of MobyGames in March 2022. He emphasised the importance of maintaining a historical record while giving developers the chance to update personal details verified by the platform.

However, if developers are entirely omitted from game credits, the system does not allow them to retroactively add themselves back. This feature addresses a long-standing industry issue where developers are often uncredited despite extensive work on projects. This concern was evident when figures like Zoid Kirsch, formerly of Retro Studios, expressed dissatisfaction about missing credits in the 2023 release of Metroid Prime Remastered.

Subscription Details

The MobyGames Professional tier is available for $14.99 monthly, with an option to subscribe annually at $11.99 per month. A 45-day free trial is currently offered to new subscribers.
