Instacart aims to reduce item markups for growth

Instacart is making strategic moves to tackle affordability as a core component of its growth plan. During the Groceryshop conference in Las Vegas, Instacart’s CEO, Chris Rogers, outlined how the company aims to change its perception from being merely a delivery service to a comprehensive grocery solution provider.

Shifting Strategy Focus

Rogers, who assumed his role in August 2025, expressed his commitment to making grocery delivery more financially accessible. Instacart is working closely with retailers to lower online markups, which often make groceries more expensive than their in-store counterparts. By alleviating these markups, Instacart intends to offer a more cost-effective solution for its customers and encourage the adoption of online grocery shopping.

Expanding Technology and International Reach

Instacart is also broadening its technological scope by powering 380 grocery e-commerce websites, marking a shift from its identity as merely a delivery service to becoming a grocery technology platform. Furthermore, the company has begun its international expansion beyond Canada and the United States for the first time.

Challenges and Consumer Expectations

Rogers highlighted the fragmentation faced by retailers who require a seamless technological ecosystem across e-commerce, ads, and AI solutions. Instacart seeks to fill this void by becoming a one-stop technology provider. He also noted the increasing demand for a tailored shopping experience, stating that understanding customer preferences is vital to meeting these expectations and driving repeat business.

Affordability and Convenience

Despite rising costs of living impacting consumer behaviour, Rogers said customers are prioritising both affordability and convenience. Instacart’s solution lies in reducing marked-up prices and integrating retailer loyalty programmes. By working with retailers to forgo online markups, Instacart has observed accelerated growth and better customer retention, indicating that consumers gravitate towards value offerings.

Investments in Pricing and Delivery Options

In addition to collaboration with retailers, Instacart is making direct investments to offer lower prices. Initiatives such as Instacart Plus allow for $0 delivery on orders starting at $10, with further low-cost options like in-store pickup and no-rush delivery to enhance affordability. Rogers described affordability as his top focus, emphasising its importance since stepping into the CEO role a year ago.
