Sephora is set to expand its presence in the UK by establishing “Sephora at M&S” shop-in-shops across 100 Marks & Spencer locations and online starting next spring. This initiative mirrors the beauty retailer’s strategy in the US, where similar partnerships have driven sales and traffic.
Strategic Partnership to Enhance Market Reach
The collaboration is expected to strengthen Sephora’s position in the UK beauty market. Marks & Spencer anticipates that incorporating Sephora’s brand within its stores will attract new customers while encouraging loyalty among existing ones. The retailer currently holds just over 1% of the UK beauty market share as of mid-July this year.
The introduction of Sephora outlets is part of M&S’s broader strategy to revitalise its beauty segment, which includes enhancing its private-label beauty offerings. John Lyttle, Managing Director of Fashion, Home, and Beauty at M&S, highlighted the importance of the beauty category in attracting and retaining customers, stating that the partnership forms a crucial element of the company’s ongoing transformation in the sector.
The Broader UK Beauty Landscape
According to data from WorldPanel by Numerator, the UK beauty market is nearing a value of $7 billion, having seen a 1.2% growth in the year ending July 19. The joint venture between Sephora and M&S looks to tap into this expanding market.
While Sephora has previously succeeded with a similar model in the US through its collaboration with Kohl’s starting in 2020, the setup at M&S offers a fresh dynamic. Neil Saunders, Managing Director at GlobalData, noted that M&S benefits from a strong brand positioning and existing appeal among younger demographics, particularly through its successful food and personal care offerings.
Unlike Kohl’s, where the introduction of Sephora was intended to bolster a struggling core proposition, M&S’s approach is seen as more strategic. The retailer is leveraging existing strengths and aims to use Sephora to appeal to younger shoppers.
Accelerating Sephora’s UK Ambitions
Catherine Spindler, Sephora’s President of Europe and the Middle East, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, describing it as a progression of Sephora’s UK strategy. She emphasised that the collaboration with M&S aligns with their goal to extend their UK footprint by integrating their prestigious beauty offering with M&S’s established retail infrastructure.
This move reflects Sephora’s commitment to broadening its brand impact across the UK after a successful launch, marking a strategic evolution in its retail approach.
