The popular James Bond game, 007 First Light, is receiving a significant free update today, titled Extended Operations. This downloadable content (DLC) introduces several fan-requested features, including New Game Plus and a more challenging 00 difficulty mode, alongside a photo mode and additional TacSim mission challenges.
Game Enhancements and New Features
The update brings adjustments to gameplay, such as improved weapon handling for more precise movements and enhanced enemy interactions, allowing foes to throw James Bond off ledges—a move previously exclusive to the player. New Game Plus becomes accessible after completing the main campaign on any difficulty, unlocking the new 00 difficulty level. This mode is described as “considerably harder”, intensifying combat, stealth, and social interactions. Players will experience faster enemy reactions, tougher guard variants, limited gadget usage, and more demanding combat mechanics, including two-hit kills and reduced player advantage in combat scenarios.
Expanded TacSim Missions
The TacSim missions feature the reintroduction of the Aston Martin Valhalla. Players can speed through the Slovakian mountainside at different times of day, equipped with rocket-launchers for added challenge. Another mission takes place at the Pearl resort in Vietnam, where Bond must retrieve classified documents, with the revamped villa interior offering enhanced stealth opportunities.
New Photo Mode and Directors’ Insight
The new photo mode allows players to pause the action at any point, even mid-battle, to capture the moment with character pose adjustments and various image settings like lighting and lens filters. Game director Dominic Vega expressed gratitude to the player community, stating in an announcement trailer, “This DLC is brought to you as a thank you to all the players who’ve been with us since the game’s release.” Vega’s recent promotion from mission director to game director suggests a change in his role within the project.
Game Success and Studio Challenges
Launched in May, 007 First Light has gained acclaim as one of the finest James Bond games in years, noted for its captivating action and charm. Within three months, sales surpassed 4 million copies, hinting at the likelihood of a sequel from IO Interactive. Despite this achievement, the studio faces challenges, having experienced a setback when Xbox withdrew from a publishing agreement for their upcoming online role-playing game, Project Fantasy.
