A significant increase in energy bills is expected in the UK, prompting calls for government intervention. Energy UK, the trade body representing energy suppliers, warns that failure to address rising energy costs could lead to a prolonged and severe crisis.
Rising Energy Costs Forecast
Energy forecasts predict a 16% increase in domestic gas prices at the beginning of the new year, affecting approximately 20 million households on variable tariffs under Ofgem’s price cap. This follows a recent 4% rise in gas prices as of the beginning of October, increasing the average annual bill by about £60, bringing it to a total of £1,723 for households paying by direct debit. This figure could soar to £1,999 by January, according to data from Cornwall Insight.
Impact of External Factors
The increase in energy prices is partly driven by high wholesale gas prices, influenced by geopolitical events such as Middle East conflicts and shipping disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz. These factors have negated benefits from previous government interventions like the reduction of VAT on electricity and the elimination of certain levies.
Calls for Government Action
Dhara Vyas, the Chief Executive of Energy UK, emphasises the urgency for intervention, noting a significant rise in customer debt, which adds an average of £67 annually to household bills. Vyas points out that the current situation echoes the 2022 crisis arising from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, urging for proactive measures to avoid a repeat.
Suggestions from Energy UK include enhanced targeted support for vulnerable households, introducing a social tariff, and shifting more levies from electricity bills to taxation. National Energy, a charity campaigning against fuel poverty, supports these recommendations, highlighting that rising debt is increasingly burdening low-income households.
Government’s Response
Prime Minister Andy Burnham acknowledges the challenges posed by rising energy costs and expresses the government’s commitment to exploring measures to alleviate financial pressures on households. In a recent statement, Burnham underlined the seriousness of the energy situation, echoing concerns raised by EDF Energy’s CEO Simone Rossi, who has warned of an impending crisis.
