Whisker, the company behind the automated cat litter box known as Litter Robot, has ventured into TikTok Shop a year ago to capitalise on the platform’s appeal among younger audiences such as Gen Z and Gen Alpha. The company aims to benefit from early adoption advantages and expand its reach through this social commerce channel.
Despite the Litter Robot’s considerable price point of $699, it has gained traction on TikTok Shop. The product’s distinctive and eye-catching design, particularly its self-cleaning feature, has driven viewer curiosity, turning it into what Whisker describes as a “thumb stopper”. This virality has not only boosted sales on TikTok Shop but is also expected to have a ripple effect, spurring sales on Whisker’s direct-to-consumer website and via Amazon.
Insights from Whisker’s CMO
Hew Loyd, Whisker’s Chief Marketing Officer, shared insights on the brand’s approach to TikTok Shop on this week’s Modern Retail Podcast. Whisker has remained committed to its pricing strategy, eschewing the aggressive discounting methods favoured by many other TikTok Shop sellers.
Additionally, Whisker is focusing on gaining valuable customer insights by encouraging TikTok Shop buyers to use the Litter Robot app. This strategy aids in acquiring first-party data and better understanding customer behaviours. Whisker is also refining its affiliate program, concentrating on collaboration with niche content creators rather than pursuing a strategy of high-volume postings.
