DoorDash expands with new retailers and texting assistant

In recent weeks, DoorDash has been rapidly extending its presence in the retail sector and enhancing its technological capabilities, revealing ambitious initiatives to diversify beyond food delivery.

Expanding Marketplace Presence

This week, DoorDash welcomed an array of new retailers—Macy’s, Anthropologie, The North Face, Vans, and Timberland—into its marketplace, significantly broadening its retail offerings. In a move to streamline the return process for customers, the company introduced the Dasher Returns service, facilitating the pickup of returns via DoorDash. Concurrently, DoorDash has upgraded its technological infrastructure with several new artificial intelligence-driven tools. Notably, the Text DoorDash feature, an extension of the Ask DoorDash assistant, empowers users to interact with and order through the platform via simple text messaging, eliminating the need to navigate the app directly.

Strategic Partnerships

Earlier this month, DoorDash reached a significant milestone by forming a coveted partnership with Costco, adding the major retailer to its platform—a longstanding goal for the company. In addition, DoorDash has increased its support for the Snap/EBT programme by partnering with seven additional grocery stores across the nation, including Albertsons Market, Amigos, and Boyer’s Food Markets, further expanding its service to more diverse consumer bases.

The Digital Shopping Experience

DoorDash is committed to revolutionising online shopping, aiming to create a “mall in your pocket” experience that reduces the complexities of virtual browsing and purchasing. According to Mike Goldblatt, Vice President of Enterprise Partnerships at DoorDash, the company is focused on evolving from a convenience-centric delivery service to a more habitual shopping companion by aligning with both retailer expectations and shifting customer behaviours.

Goldblatt noted that with the addition of Costco, DoorDash now collaborates with eight of the top ten U.S. grocery chains. He emphasised the enriched value and selection brought to members and consumers through such partnerships, acknowledging the pre-existing demand from DoorDash users for Costco integration on the platform.

Enhancing User Experience with AI

In its pursuit to offer an improved and seamless shopping process, DoorDash is refining its platform with conversational AI capabilities. The company aims to tailor the digital shopping experience to diverse consumer patterns, from those who quickly complete purchases to those seeking inspiration or variety. Goldblatt explained that advanced AI features help accelerate the traditionally time-consuming task of searching for and selecting products, ultimately leading to larger purchase baskets and higher conversion rates.

Beyond technological enhancements, DoorDash continues to focus on value and affordability, which remain crucial for its users. This is particularly true for economically cautious consumers. The platform facilitates cost-effective choices through in-app features, such as its agentic assistant, which suggests money-saving alternatives like different product sizes or less expensive private-label products. Such initiatives help cultivate trust among consumers, reinforcing the perception that they are receiving optimal value.

In its commitment to greater accessibility, DoorDash highlighted that since implementing SNAP/EBT payment options three years ago, over 4.5 million users have enrolled their SNAP cards on the platform. Now, approximately 75,000 stores nationwide accept this payment method, providing 99% of SNAP beneficiaries access to at least one store through DoorDash.
