Halloween: the game launches digitally in New Zealand

New Zealand will see the digital release of “Halloween: The Game” on 8th September, after initial uncertainty due to Australia’s classification refusal. Though Australia’s ban also impacted the game’s physical release in New Zealand, digital sales remain unaffected thanks to the separate classification system in place in New Zealand.

Clarification on Classification Misunderstanding

The confusion arose when IllFonic, the game’s developer, learned that while the Australian Classification Board’s (ACB) refusal impacted physical releases across both countries, it did not extend to the digital market in New Zealand. IllFonic clarified that while the ACB rating governs physical releases, digital classifications in New Zealand are managed under a distinct system.

New Zealand’s Independent Digital Classification

The Office of Film and Literature Classification in New Zealand has confirmed that “Halloween: The Game” was never submitted for classification within the country, and no local laws prevent its digital release. New Zealand’s system permits digital-only releases to be sold without a prior local classification, although companies may choose to obtain one voluntarily.

Australian Ban and New Zealand Release Details

While the game will not be available digitally or physically in Australia unless IllFonic alters or resubmits it, New Zealand players can access the digital version as scheduled. The physical edition, however, will only be released on 6th October in territories outside these regions.

Game Features and Gameplay Modes

“Halloween: The Game” aims to capture the essence of the original 1978 movie with settings that recreate iconic locations of Haddonfield. It boasts an asymmetrical multiplayer mode alongside an offline single-player story mode, enriched with a soundtrack reminiscent of John Carpenter’s legendary music.
