Reddit Introduces AI-Driven Audio and Video Content from Posts
Reddit has initiated an innovative experiment aimed at transforming text posts into engaging audio/video content. This project involves the utilisation of AI-generated voices to articulate both the primary posts and select comments, offering a novel way for users to consume content on the platform.
AI Voices Bring Forum Discussions to Life
The experiment showcases Reddit posts via videos where AI voices read the text aloud. These experimental videos highlight the text while being narrated, accompanied by a note asserting it is a “Real conversation voiced by AI.” This approach was exemplified in an old r/boardgames post, where an eight-year-old query about road trip games with 101 responses was revamped into a three-minute video narration. Users can toggle between the traditional text format and the video through a “Read” or “Play” slider at the top. While this eases engagement for forum novices, it may also lead to issues like mispronunciations or inaccuracies in cited comments.
Company Strategy to Modernise Content Interaction
This move aligns with Reddit’s strategy as outlined in a shareholder earnings letter, emphasising a modernised video experience to enhance user and community interaction. CEO Steve Huffman, during an earnings call, noted the emergence of content where Reddit posts are read aloud, mentioning that auditory versions could offer an engaging experience. Entire YouTube channels capitalise on this model, with AI voices narrating Reddit content, reflecting a potential shift in how users engage with platform material.
Availability and Future Expansion
The experiment is currently accessible to users on the web and is expected to extend to iOS and Android beginning Tuesday, as stated by Reddit spokesperson Rosa Kim. This venture aims to gauge user response to these formats and refine their integration to maintain Reddit’s authenticity. Initially limited to selected posts, the feature is set to expand to more content gradually.
In addition to this initiative, Reddit earlier introduced video reply functionalities, signalling a broader trend towards visual and auditory content enhancements on the platform.
