Trump warns of economic impact for aiding Iran

The United States, under President Donald Trump’s leadership, is set to impose significant economic sanctions on any nation that engages in business with Iran. Announced via Truth Social, President Trump described the initiative as “the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country,” emphasising its severity without detailing specific repercussions or identifying targeted countries.

This decision follows the lapse of a 60-day ceasefire with Iran, which ended on Monday without any diplomatic or military resolutions in sight. Both the United States and Israel have been in conflict with Iran since late February this year.

Trump’s announcement marks an intensification of his earlier campaign, Operation Economic Fury, which started in April. This initiative targets foreign banks and firms that transact with Tehran, aiming to isolate Iran economically.

In his post, President Trump labelled the action as an “economic D-Day” against Iran, triggered by the lack of agreement between Washington and Tehran. He warned that any nation supporting Iran through financial institutions, businesses, or government services would face severe repercussions, although he remained vague about the specific sanctions to be imposed.

Listing prohibited activities, Trump highlighted issues like oil smuggling, financial exchanges, and businesses operating under the guise of front companies, urging an immediate cessation. He stressed, “You know who you are,” directly addressing these entities.

This announcement comes nearly a week after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that the US would enforce a level of economic isolation against Iran unlike anything previously witnessed.

Requests for comments have been extended to the White House and the US Treasury Department. The international community awaits further clarification on the specific measures that will be undertaken in this intensified economic campaign.
