Barnes & Noble has strengthened its presence in Chicago with the launch of a new store located at State Street in the Loop, which opened on 19 August. This expansion comes amidst the company’s revitalisation efforts which have seen it halt a 15-year trend of store closures.
The Chicago debut drew enthusiastic crowds, with patrons lining up early for a 9:00 a.m. opening. The retailer reported consistent traffic throughout the day, reflecting a warm reception from local book lovers.
Expanding Footprint Across the United States
Barnes & Noble’s strategy to expand its retail presence included opening 60 stores in the previous year and maintaining a similar pace in 2024. The company attributes this renewed growth to empowering local booksellers with more control over store operations. The Loop’s location marks their fourth bookstore opening in the Chicago area in 2026, following launches in Skokie, Hyde Park, and Oak Park.
A Prime Location with Extensive Offerings
Occupying a space previously held by Old Navy and, earlier, by Borders until its 2011 closure, the new 20,000 square-foot store spans two floors, with diverse collections of books, games, toys, and more. Although the third floor remains closed, there is currently no information on when it may open.
Shoppers can find various book categories, including fiction, classics, and manga. There’s a dedicated section celebrating Chicago, along with a Harry Potter area, and a selection of records, DVDs, and CDs. A notable feature of the store is the “words are magic” greeting at the checkout and a view of The Chicago Theatre en route to the restrooms.
Celebrating Literature and Community
The grand opening was graced by the presence of New York Times bestselling author Jasmine Warga, who led the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The day also featured interactions with authors Becca Grischow, Mikki Kendall, and Gloria Chao.
A company spokesperson highlighted the significance of the Loop location, noting, “The Loop presented a wonderful opportunity to bring Barnes & Noble back to a vibrant, high-energy location. We were very pleased to have it work out.”
A Growing Company
Since its acquisition by Elliott Advisors in 2019, Barnes & Noble has expanded to over 720 locations. The company made further acquisitions, including purchasing Books Inc. for $3.25 million in 2025 and acquiring Tattered Cover in 2024. Their strategic aim remains to open inviting bookstores in communities eager for their presence, as reiterated by a company spokesperson.
