GTA 6 features extensive animations, says Rockstar

Rockstar Games has significantly upped the ante with its latest instalment, Grand Theft Auto 6, incorporating a staggering 600,000 unique animations in the game. This represents a substantial leap from the animation count of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, showcasing the scale and ambition of the new title.

Record-Breaking Animation Scale

In a preview coinciding with the Netflix premiere, GTA 6: An Extended Look, it was revealed that the game’s intricate animations span across every element of its fictional world, from vehicles and people to animals both on land and underwater. In contrast, its predecessor GTA 5 incorporated 55,000 animations, while Red Dead Redemption 2 had 300,000—which was already considered remarkable for its time.

The Attention to Detail

Aaron Garbut, Rockstar North’s art director and co-head, highlighted the meticulous nature of the development process. He explained that the attention to minute details extends to every room in the game, where elements such as where people sit, what they consume, and personal design choices are crafted with specificity. Garbut described instances where not only are the decorations chosen with intent, but they also encapsulate personal stories, like tattoos on the characters depicted in photographs within the game environment.

Innovations and Game Mechanics

Besides the expansive animation work, Rockstar is also revisiting a classic game mechanic by overhauling the series’ Wanted system, aiming to refresh how players interact with law enforcement in the game. Moreover, it has been hinted that players will have the ability to influence the dynamic between the main characters in GTA 6, adding an additional layer of gameplay depth.
