Google pushes search results further under AI mode

Google Enhances AI Search Summaries, Pushing Traditional Results Lower

In a move to enhance its search experience, Google has begun to automatically expand AI-generated summaries for certain search queries. Traditionally, users would see a partial AI Overview with an option to “Show more”. Now, for some searches, an entire AI Overview is displayed immediately at the top of the results page. This reconfiguration pushes customary search links further down, requiring users to scroll more extensively to access them.

Criteria for AI Overview Expansion Remains Vague

The specific criteria Google employs to determine when to auto-expand AI Overviews remain unspecified. Inconsistent results have been observed in test searches; for example, queries such as “what is the best game on switch 2” sometimes trigger the expanded AI Overview, but this does not consistently occur across different searches and browsers. Before this feature was widely reported, initial tests frequently resulted in these auto-expanded summaries. However, it’s now more common to see just the beginning of the AI response with an option to expand.

Adjustments Based on User Interaction

Google representative Jennifer Kutz explained that the AI Overviews may auto-expand for subjects where their systems deem it most beneficial for users. The company’s research indicates that this dynamic format enhances user engagement and aids further exploration. Importantly, if a user has already begun scrolling through the results, Google’s system will halt the AI Overview expansion to prevent users from losing their place.
