Cloud Imperium Games has announced a delay for its much-anticipated single-player project, Squadron 42, now pushing its release to the second quarter of 2027. The decision was influenced by concerns about competing with the launch of GTA 6, CEO Chris Roberts has said.
Strategic Delay to Avoid Competition
Originally set for a late 2026 debut, Squadron 42, a game closely tied to Cloud Imperium’s Star Citizen, has been rescheduled. According to a recent blog post by Chris Roberts, releasing the game in autumn would coincide with Rockstar’s high-profile GTA 6 release. Reflecting on the extensive effort since its inception in 2014, Roberts emphasized the necessity of a strategic delay, given the 12 years of dedication that have gone into its development.
Upcoming Previews and Details
Although the game won’t meet its previously planned launch, Cloud Imperium intends to offer previews to select content creators and early backers this October. While the exact release date is yet to be confirmed, it is expected that more information will be provided “shortly” after these previews. The revised timeline suggests a spring 2027 release, provided there are no further adjustments.
A Long-Awaited Release
Squadron 42 has experienced numerous delays throughout its development, which started shortly after the establishment of new studios and personnel hiring in 2013. Noteworthy for its star-studded cast, the game includes performances by Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill, Andy Serkis, Ben Mendelsohn, and Mark Strong.
Star Citizen’s Financial Success
Meanwhile, Star Citizen, the multiplayer component of Cloud Imperium’s offerings, reached a significant milestone by surpassing $1 billion in crowdfunding as of May. This achievement coincided with the launch of an extravagant new ship, the Anvil Odin capital ship, priced at $5000 (£3700). Despite being a “limited vehicle concept pledge” without a firm release date, those purchasing were temporarily provided with an Idris P vessel.
