AI and data centres face public disapproval in polls

Public Opposition to AI Data Centers on the Rise

A recent survey highlights widespread resistance to the construction of data centers for artificial intelligence technologies, with 61 percent of likely voters expressing opposition. The poll, conducted in early September by the New York Times and Siena University, provides insight into public sentiment around this growing tech infrastructure.

Poll Results Show Divided Opinions

The survey polled 1,503 likely voters and found a significant divide in opinions. While 61 percent opposed the data centers, only 14 percent expressed strong support. Among voters likely to choose Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential elections, support was nearly split, with 49 percent in favor and 45 percent against. Conversely, 74 percent of Kamala Harris voters and 67 percent of non-voters indicated opposition to these developments.

Concerns and Preferences for Restrictions

Within the group opposing data center construction, 56 percent support implementing limits, while 38 percent favour a total ban. The primary concern cited was environmental impact, particularly regarding water usage, accounting for 32 percent of the reasons listed. Other concerns included effects on local communities (21 percent), general distrust or dislike of AI (18 percent), regulatory issues (10 percent), and economic impacts (9 percent).

AI Data Centers Low on Voter Priority

Despite the opposition, AI data centers remain a low priority for voters when considering midterm election issues. The topic registered at less than one percent importance across most demographic groups. It resonated slightly more with younger voters aged 18-29, where it drew a three percent response. Overall, voter trust regarding the handling of AI data center issues was evenly split, with 42 percent favouring Republicans, 40 percent siding with Democrats, and 18 percent undecided or unwilling to state a preference.

AI Image in Broader Context

The unfavourable views of AI data centers align with previous findings. An NBC News poll in March found AI rated lower than ICE, and a Gallup poll in May revealed seven in ten Americans objected to local AI data center construction. This sentiment is consistent with the ongoing discussions about AI technology’s role in society and its potential repercussions.
