Airbnb CEO discusses approach to hotels, cars, flights

During the recent Skift Global Forum in New York City, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky revealed a shift in his perspective on incorporating traditional hotel chains and standard online travel agency (OTA) services into Airbnb’s business model. Approximately 18 years after co-founding the company, Chesky acknowledged a transformation in his initial resistance to mainstream offerings such as hotel chains, car rentals, and flight services.

Evolving Business Strategy

While speaking at the forum, Chesky expressed openness to including prominent hotel brands like Hiltons and Marriotts on Airbnb’s platform in the future. This marks a deviation from his earlier stance, where integrating such brands seemed misaligned with Airbnb’s unique identity.

Moreover, Chesky admitted that Airbnb has already begun embracing “commodities” with car rentals being offered, and he predictably mentioned flights as another addition the platform may eventually feature. Despite this diversification, he reassured that the essence of Airbnb’s offerings would continue to prioritise unique experiences.

Redefining Airbnb’s Identity

Chesky responded to the notion of Airbnb being classified as an OTA by arguing that such a label would be “incomplete”. He differentiated the platform by emphasising its foundation as a “community” rather than only a transactional travel service. He highlighted interesting statistics such as the average of three guests per booking to further illustrate Airbnb’s distinctiveness compared to conventional OTAs.
