Amazon exits multiplayer online gaming

Amazon Withdraws from MMO Gaming Industry

Amazon is making a strategic retreat from the massively multiplayer online (MMO) gaming sector. The company declared on Wednesday that it will relinquish its involvement in the operation of two prominent MMO games, Throne and Liberty and Lost Ark, handing over control to other firms by the end of the decade. Throne and Liberty will come under the management of FirstSpark Games and NC by the fourth quarter of 2026, while Smilegate will assume responsibility for Lost Ark in early 2027.

Shift in Company’s Gaming Focus

This decision follows Amazon’s broader strategic shift announced in October of the previous year, where the tech giant expressed plans to significantly reduce its efforts on developing first-party AAA games, particularly MMOs. The shift also included changes for New World: Aeternum, another MMO created by Amazon, which halted new content updates and discontinued sales in January 2023. The game is scheduled to be shut down entirely on January 31st, 2027.

New Directions in Gaming Experiences

Withdrawing from MMOs aligns with Amazon’s current gaming strategy, which places greater emphasis on its Luna cloud gaming platform and interactive, party-oriented games that utilize mobile devices as controllers. These initiatives include titles featuring AI versions of celebrities like Snoop Dogg and Arnold Schwarzenegger and games connected to other major Amazon franchises such as James Bond and Tomb Raider.
