Amazon launches ad services in ChatGPT for marketers

Amazon has embarked on a collaboration with OpenAI, allowing advertisers to broaden their campaigns into ChatGPT’s conversational experiences. This initiative comes as part of a U.S. pilot programme and integrates with Amazon’s demand-side platform (DSP), bolstering the growing area of conversational ads.

Amazon and OpenAI Join Forces

The partnership between Amazon and OpenAI introduces a new venue for advertisers to engage potential customers within the ChatGPT environment. Among the U.S. brands testing this innovation is Delta Vacations, known for its airline-related holiday packages. ChatGPT Ads merchandise can be accessed via Amazon’s DSP as stated by an Amazon representative.

Conversational ads are rapidly emerging as a robust channel for brand engagement. OpenAI has rapidly advanced ChatGPT’s advertising capabilities since launching earlier this year, and it has recently reached a significant revenue milestone, underscoring its growth potential.

Strategic Advertising Innovations

This alliance with OpenAI facilitates Amazon’s entry into avenues intertwined with artificial intelligence, while also providing OpenAI an opportunity to attract a diverse range of advertisers. Amazon, which recorded close to $70 billion in advertising revenue last year, offers a managed service for buying ChatGPT Ads through its DSP with cost models based on clicks and impressions.

OpenAI will independently manage ad delivery through its systems. Advertisements will appear as marked text and image units below ChatGPT’s organic responses. The pilot programme is currently restricted to the U.S., with ChatGPT showcasing ads on its free and more affordable Go subscription models. Additionally, Amazon is rolling out automatic product feed ads that derive assets from product catalogues.

Impact on Advertisers

Amazon’s extensive shopping and streaming data are a draw for improving marketing efficiency. Through this collaboration, ChatGPT is leveraging advertising to create richer contextual campaigns. Advertisers participating in the integration will access data reflecting impressions, clicks, and cost metrics.

Katrin Koenig, president of Delta Vacations, expressed optimism about the potential to tailor travel experiences more precisely through the partnership with Amazon Ads and ChatGPT Ads, enabling greater consumer engagement and discovery of holiday options.

Future Prospects and Expansion

OpenAI began testing ChatGPT advertisements in February and has swiftly expanded this business in preparation for an anticipated initial public offering. Despite some scepticism and reports of underperformance, tens of thousands of advertisers currently utilise ChatGPT Ads, which has extended into regions such as India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

The partnership with Amazon represents a strategic move in OpenAI’s scale ambitions, although initial talks with independent rival The Trade Desk were reported earlier this year.
