Amazon MGM Studios plans major expansion at historic Bray Film Studios in Berkshire
Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward with an ambitious expansion of Bray Film Studios in Water Oakley, near Windsor, once the iconic location of Hammer Films. The plan, which received initial planning permission under previous ownership in 2022 before Amazon MGM’s acquisition in 2024, anticipates significant local and national benefits for the film industry.
Support from the British Film Commission
The British Film Commission (BFC) has expressed strong support for the expansion, highlighting its importance to the local community and the UK film sector. In its remarks, the BFC acknowledged Amazon MGM’s dedication to enhancing job opportunities in the region and beyond.
New Developments at Bray Film Studios
Among the proposed developments are a multi-storey car park and six additional sound stages, part of a strategy to unlock the full potential of the site. Amazon MGM predicts the construction phase will create 470 jobs, with an eventual 920 positions developing throughout Berkshire once the expansion is complete.
Community and Sector Benefits
Samantha Perahia, the head of production at the BFC, communicated her support for the development to the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. She emphasised that the enhancements planned for Bray Studios will strengthen the area’s reputation among international clients and significantly bolster the joint efforts of the BFC and its partners in promoting both the region and the wider UK as prime filming destinations.
Decisions on the final planning application are still pending, with Amazon MGM keen to see the project’s full potential realised for both the local economy and the UK’s prestigious film industry. The public consultation for the project concluded in May.
