Battlefield 6 adds immersive Top Gun collaboration mode

The popular video game Battlefield 6 is currently experiencing a buzz with the introduction of its fourth season, highlighted by a special collaboration with the iconic film franchise, Top Gun. This crossover event marks the second half of Season 4 and showcases innovative gameplay elements that some fans feel should become permanent features rather than being time-limited.

New Game Modes Unveiled

Central to the Top Gun collaboration are two new game modes, each offering unique experiences to players. “Carrier Strike,” available in traditional multiplayer mode, is a reimagined tribute to Battlefield 2142’s Titan mode, now set on the redesigned Wake Island map. On the other hand, “Fighter Sweep” offers a thrilling deathmatch-style aerial combat experience within the free-to-play Redsec environment.

Carrier Strike stands out as an evolution of the intense, escalating gameplay synonymous with the original Titan mode. It attempts to rectify past iterations, such as Battlefield 4’s Carrier Assault, by delivering a fully fleshed-out experience. Players find excitement in the dynamic teamwork required on the deck of the aircraft carrier, scrambling jets and helicopters to gain the upper hand.

Gameplay Inspired by Top Gun

The integration of Top Gun elements brings cinematic flair to the game, particularly through the jet takeoff sequences that mimic the famous style of the movies. These sequences immerse players in the action from a cockpit perspective, akin to the single-player mission “Good Hunting” in Battlefield 3.

The primary objective in Carrier Strike is to capture missile batteries affixed to capture points around the map. Successfully capturing these points lets players target the enemy’s carrier, gradually diminishing its defence. Once the carrier’s defences are compromised, players can storm it and plant explosives to secure victory.

However, the mode incorporates strategic layers with new twists. Jets equipped with air-to-ground munitions and other vehicles can directly impact the carrier’s health, complementing or potentially overshadowing the more traditional missile strategy. Despite the added complexity, not all teams appeared to leverage these strategies during the preview event.

Challenges of Limited-Time Content

The nature of this crossover as a limited event raises concerns among fans. The modes, while marked with Top Gun branding, could arguably continue without it, should developers choose to replace the associated branding elements with neutral assets. The event is slated to conclude on 15th September. However, the fate of the new modes and vehicles post-event remains unclear.

To further complicate matters, the custom two-seater jets introduced, notably including a model inspired by the F-14 Tomcat, add significant depth to vehicle combat in the game. Though they feature a legally distinct design, they could potentially stay on as part of the core lineup with minor non-Top Gun alterations.

Fans hope for a resolution that allows these innovations to persist, enriching Battlefield 6’s gameplay beyond the constraints of the limited-time event. Whether developers opt to maintain or retire these new features remains to be seen.
