BMW i3 revamped with up to 468 miles of range

BMW Reveals Details of Revamped i3 Sedan

BMW has unveiled the comprehensive specifications of its upcoming i3 50 xDrive, an all-electric sedan set to debut in the first quarter of 2027. Initially, details regarding the i3’s battery capacity, range, and pricing were sparse. However, the German automaker has now disclosed that the vehicle will have a starting price of $61,500, plus an additional $1,350 destination fee. This positions the i3 50 xDrive within the competitive bracket of the Mercedes C-Class.

Range and Powertrain

The i3 50 xDrive promises an estimated range of up to 468 miles on a full charge, based on EPA testing. The car is equipped with two motors: a rear axle electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) producing 322 horsepower and 321 lb-ft of torque, and a front axle asynchronous motor offering 165 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque. Together, these motors deliver a total output of 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque.

The EESM acts as the main drive, utilising electricity for its operation instead of permanent magnets. An inverter plays a crucial role in this setup, converting direct current from the battery into alternating current for the motor and regulating the system to ensure optimal efficiency.

Battery Technology

While BMW has not detailed the i3’s battery capacity, the car will feature the company’s “Gen6” high-voltage battery system, characterised by cylindrical lithium-ion cells measuring 46 mm in diameter and 95 mm in height. This innovation offers a 20 percent increase in energy density over the previous generation’s prismatic cells.

Innovative Features

The i3 comes equipped with several advanced features, including bidirectional charging capabilities, allowing vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-home energy distribution. Its intelligent charging system can automatically engage when near a recognised charging point, and Plug & Charge compatibility facilitates seamless interactions with various charging providers.

BMW has also reimagined its iDrive infotainment system, replacing traditional display gauges with a heads-up windshield projection. The system allows customisation and interaction via a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, supporting up to six “widgets” for direct deployment onto the windshield.

AI Integration and Infotainment

BMW integrates Amazon’s AI-powered Alexa into the i3, enabling natural language interactions for information retrieval and in-car adjustments. When stationary, passengers can view entertainment content through the TiVo-powered Video app, with future support anticipated for Amazon Prime Video. The navigation system is built on BMW maps with Google Places integration and receives updates over-the-air via an Android-based platform.

Performance Variant

For those seeking enhanced performance, BMW plans to release the i3 M60 xDrive variant later in 2027. This model will feature M-series lighting, graphics, and 21-inch Style 1067M aerodynamic wheels, though pricing details remain undisclosed.
