A survey has highlighted the struggles faced by members of Gen Z when it comes to being reimbursed for group expenses. According to the research, 76% of this young demographic reported not being fully repaid when covering costs for collective events or trips. Tension arises in 55% of these instances, potentially damaging friendships.
Deciding When to Chase Repayments
Opinions on when it is appropriate to request repayment vary. Henry Payne, 21, from New York, sets his threshold at $8.50, mentioning that he would rather not send more than two requests: “two requests is insane.” Payne confesses that at times, he forgets to repay others and invites them to “double request” him if needed.
Nineteen-year-old Kaz Jahanbini expresses frustration with the need to ask for repayment, believing prompt repayment should be the norm. His friend Nouria concurs, usually requesting repayment on amounts over $10 due to the importance of every dollar as a student.
Annika Violet, also 19, considers whether she consistently covers a friend’s costs before requesting money back, saying, “if I’m consistently paying and you’re not, then I will request the $5.” In contrast, her friend Hanako Stepper struggles with asking for repayment, while Violet encourages a more straightforward approach, advising those uncomfortable with money discussions to “be brave and bold.”
Cultural Differences in Debt Management
British student Betsie Brooke-Taylor mentions that even small amounts matter to her, as she often chooses to ask for even £5 back. She notes a cultural contrast between the UK and US, with American friends appearing more generous, possibly due to the ease of financial apps like Venmo. In America, payment reminders through these apps simplify debt settlement, while in the UK the process often involves complex bank details.
Expert Advice on Handling Debt
Financial expert Laura Pomfret acknowledges the discomfort many feel when seeking repayment, especially among Britons. Pomfret advises that no debt is too minor to warrant a request, and warns against overlooking repeat offenders when it comes to non-repayment. According to her, the actual amount owed bears less significance than the frequency of delayed payments.
New York student Ella Feuille, 21, finds $15 is her threshold for requesting repayment. She is willing to ask up to three times before accepting a loss, adjusting her financial strategy with friends known for not repaying. Katrina Dimingot, another student, favours taking turns to pay rather than frequent repayments, which she finds more straightforward.
