Gordon Companies Inc., known for its seasonal decor brands like Christmas Central and Christmas.com, has sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection just as the peak Christmas season begins. The filing was made voluntarily in the Western District of New York on Monday.
Estimated Financials and Creditors
The business, which boasts estimated assets and liabilities ranging from $10 million to $50 million, faces the challenge of managing between 200 and 999 creditors. Among these creditors, FedEx and UPS are noted to have significant unsecured claims greater than others.
Background and Operations
Founded in 1977, Gordon Companies has remained under the leadership of its founding family, with David Gordon acting as both President and CEO. The company supports approximately 350 employees and operates over 400,000 square feet of warehousing and distribution facilities. Major retail partners listed by the company include Target, Kohl’s, Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon, Lowe’s, and Michaels.
System Challenges and Legal Actions
Some of Gordon’s recent difficulties trace back to persistent problems with an inventory and order management system it trialled. Earlier in the month, Gordon amended a complaint in the same jurisdiction against Vision33, which supplied its ordering and warehouse operations system. Despite spending over $2 million on the system, Gordon reports the software was ineffective, particularly during peak holiday demand. The partnership with Vision33, which started in 2017, was terminated in 2021 after the software failed to support the operational volume.
Compounding its operational hurdles, Gordon revealed in its complaint that it struggled to meet the demands of its sales channels due to these systemic failures. This resulted in Gordon pausing sales on certain platforms and facing a shipping delay imposed by Target on its product listings.
