Disney considered its own Super Smash Bros, says ex-dev

A previously undisclosed Disney project intended to develop a crossover fighting game in the style of Super Smash Bros. has emerged as an intriguing addition to its legacy. The plan was inspired by the surprising success of Kingdom Hearts, according to Ken Christiansen, a former concept artist for Disney Interactive and credited contributor to the first Kingdom Hearts game.

Potential Realised Through Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts introduced Disney to the concept of crossover projects by merging different worlds of its iconic characters. While the game was successful, its creation faced initial resistance from Disney, Christiansen shared in an interview. Disney executives expressed hesitation about merging distinct universes, like The Lion King and The Little Mermaid, which created some tension during development. Despite this, the game became one of the PlayStation 2’s best sellers, encouraging further exploration of such projects.

Project Drawing Board: Disney’s Action Figure Face Off

Following Kingdom Hearts’ success, Disney warmed up to collaboration concepts and initiated a project known as Disney’s Action Figure Face Off. This venture envisaged Disney characters engaging in battles reminiscent of Super Smash Bros. with a dynamic akin to Toy Story brought to life. Characters from films like Tarzan, The Lion King, and Treasure Planet were considered for this action-packed crossover concept, Ken Christiansen recounted.

Prototypes and Shifting Focus

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding Disney’s Action Figure Face Off, the project never advanced beyond initial prototypes. Disney chose to concentrate on more conventional film tie-ins instead. However, the concept of combining various Disney universes found success in other ventures, such as the toys-to-life game Disney Infinity, the racing game Disney Speedstorm, and Disney Dreamlight Valley, a life simulation game.

Kingdom Hearts Legacy Continues

The Kingdom Hearts series, which initially sparked the crossover interest, remains active and successful. Kingdom Hearts 4 is slated for release late next year, while a Disney Plus anime series is also under development, ensuring the continuation of its engaging universe.
