Finding the best Polish dumplings in Gdańsk

In the bustling city of Gdańsk on Poland’s Baltic coast, my quest for the ideal pierogi, the quintessential Polish dumpling, led me to reevaluate my long-standing indifference towards these celebrated dough parcels. Despite previous ambivalence, the diverse offerings in Gdańsk beckoned as I embarked on a culinary exploration to discover if the local delicacies could sway my palate.

The Delight of Gdański Bowke

Situated along the picturesque riverside, Gdański Bowke provides a scenic setting to delve into classic fillings like potato and cheese, cabbage and mushroom, and minced pork. The dumplings, boiled and then briefly fried, achieve a delightful crispy texture and come accompanied by bacon bits and sour cream. The standout, a potato and cheese pierogi, blends well with its salty and creamy pairings, making this stop a pleasant experience.

A Sweet Surprise at Panorama

Panorama is not your average dining spot; perched on the 16th floor, it offers commanding views over Gdańsk’s historic shipyard. Here, unique charcoal-tinted pierogi filled with raspberry and white chocolate deliver a strikingly delicious flavour, harmonising sour and sweet notes. The unexpected choice of dessert-like pierogi for a main course paid off, with a fascinating interplay of textures from strawberry accompaniments.

Diverse Offerings at Mandu

Mandu entices with its variety—40 different pierogi options showcasing unconventional fillings like chorizo and even truffle paste. The on-site preparation adds an artisanal touch, and while the meat and cheese filling is commendable, the heavier yeast dough leaves me longing for a mix of options. Still, Mandu excels in displaying the versatility of pierogi, catering to adventurous palates.

Stary Młyn: Traditional Yet Repetitive

Located in a charming old mill, Stary Młyn draws visitors with its reputation for traditional pierogi. The mixed plate features nine different varieties, though the repetitive nature of thick dough can be overwhelming. Despite the quality of fillings such as beef rib or cheese, the overbearing dough somewhat masks their individual appeal.

Winning Flavours at Oberża 86

A quick detour to Gdynia, part of the Tricity area with Gdańsk, uncovers a surprise in Oberża 86. Their expertly crafted starter pierogi, stuffed with broad beans and accompanied by a tangy shallot sauce, shine with balance and flavour. Complemented by a refreshing Polish wine, this experience redefines pierogi excellence, earning a top spot in my book.
