The latest expansion for The Witcher 3, titled “Songs of the Past,” has just been unveiled by CD Projekt Red during the Opening Night Live event, showcasing a new locale named Letten. This location marks the hometown of Dandelion, Geralt’s well-known bard companion. However, pinpointing Letten on existing maps proves challenging.
An Uncharted Territory
Letten, as described by Peter Gelencser, world director for the expansion at co-developer Fool’s Theory, is situated in the north, roughly midway between Kovir and Kaedwen. Gelencser provided a more detailed navigation guide during a CDPR Gamescom stream: start at the Gulf of Praxeda, head east along the Buina river, and then turn right at the Nimnar river to reach this newly created land.
Despite these directions, Letten’s exact position remains unclear on most maps. Gelencser’s guidance suggests Letten is located somewhere near Gelibol in northern Redania, relatively close to Blaviken, a notable place in Geralt’s past.
Scenic Yet Mysterious Atmosphere
Karolina Kuzia-Rokosz, vision director at Fool’s Theory, described Letten as a tranquil, pastoral area reminiscent of the Polish countryside. The setting for the expansion is during the springtime festival of Belleteyn, celebrating the end of winter, which brings vibrant landscapes to life. Kuzia-Rokosz highlighted the “crisp light” and blooming colours seen in recent gameplay footage. However, Gelencser hinted at a hidden darker element beneath this serene facade.
Timeline and Launch Details
According to Kuzia-Rokosz, “Songs of the Past” begins shortly after Geralt’s intended retirement at Corvo Bianco following the “Blood and Wine” expansion. Yet, Geralt finds himself drawn into a new adventure. Scheduled for release next year, the expansion will be available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and Switch 2.
Additional Announcements
The reveal of “Songs of the Past” coincided with the announcement of a Remastered edition of The Witcher 3, featuring enhanced graphics and gameplay improvements, including combat. This expansion was reportedly conceptualised by CDPR years ago, and it may introduce a new romance for Geralt. Further insights on the game from the Gamescom event are anticipated soon.
