Fragrance emerges as key to premium pricing strategy

In 2026, the allure of fragrance extends beyond the beauty aisles, increasingly influencing sectors like personal care and household products. This evolving trend is seeing companies utilise distinct scents to stand out in competitive markets.

Fragrance Leads the Charge in Retail Innovation

Fragrance has emerged as a distinguishing factor for brands aiming to capture consumer interest, according to Diana Melencio, a general partner at XRC Brand Capital Fund. Speaking on the Modern Retail Podcast, Melencio highlighted the notable presence of high-end fragrance products on retail shelves, such as Target and Walmart, particularly in the laundry and cleaning products sections.

Investment Opportunities in Scented Products

Melencio is keenly following this trend with a view to potential investment. She points to companies like DedCool, which creates gender-neutral fragrances, and Touchland, a sanitiser brand, both of which are gaining recognition for their premium pricing and presence in major retail locations like Sephora. Established brands, including Unilever, are also exploring new fragrance lines, balancing these offerings with the need to maintain affordability for budget-conscious customers.

Significant Growth in the Fragrance Sector

Research conducted by XRC reveals that the fragrance sector saw a 15% growth in mass products and a 5% rise in prestige products in 2025. This uptick surpasses growth seen in other beauty categories, indicating a robust interest in fragrance. During the podcast, Melencio and special projects editor Melissa Daniels explored the reasons behind this surge and how various brands are striving to benefit from it.

The Consumer’s Perspective and Brand Challenges

The dialogue also delved into consumers’ willingness to invest in high-quality scents and the challenges facing large companies when competing with agile startups in creating innovative fragrance offerings. They highlighted some of the current popular fragrances and discussed how perfumers are identifying emerging scent trends for the coming years.
