Numerous companies attending Gamescom in Cologne have fallen victim to recent thefts, with multiple exhibitors reporting stolen laptops and equipment from their booths. The losses have significantly disrupted their participation in the event.
Indie Developer Faces Setback
Among those affected is Ryan Laley, the creator behind the indie game Mimic. He revealed in an emotional video posted to social media on Friday that his booth was targeted overnight by thieves, alongside others. Laley expressed his disappointment, explaining that the theft of his laptops, with chargers left behind, has ended his Gamescom experience prematurely. He has already filed reports with the event’s management, security, and the police, although he holds little hope for the recovery of his items.
Laley, whose work as a solo developer has now become more challenging due to these losses, said, “As an indie solo dev, this shit’s expensive. And hard to do all by yourself. And to have this happen is beyond frustrating. It’s heartbreaking.”
In a show of support, the developers of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red, reached out to Laley, offering some relief with a promise to assist where possible.
Additional Incidents Reported
Other exhibitors have shared similar misfortunes. The creative company Iam8bit reported the overnight theft of two laptops from their booth in the business area, which were essential for showcasing their upcoming titles, Petal Runner and Escape Academy 2. The stolen laptops contained unfinished game builds, posing a further risk of leaks and creating severe inconvenience for scheduled demonstrations.
Tessera Studios, responsible for The Zibbo Show, also described a break-in earlier in the week at their booth, resulting in the loss of two laptops and a Steam Deck containing personal and critical company data. Tessera Studios highlighted that they were not alone, noting thefts also occurred at the Games from Spain booth and elsewhere on the premises.
Ukiyo Studios shared their past experiences, recounting an incident two years prior when a PC was stolen from their booth and efforts to report it were obstructed. They emphasised the necessity of added security at Gamescom compared to other events they attend worldwide.
Gamescom’s Response
In response to the string of thefts, Gamescom organisers have acknowledged the incidents and expressed their concern, stating they are taking the reports seriously. Security measures include uniformed guards patrolling the venue, and exhibitors are encouraged to secure their booths further and insure their equipment, as detailed in the event’s guidelines.
The organisers concluded by affirming their commitment to minimising risks, although they admitted that the size of the event could attract individuals looking to exploit the situation. Gamescom assured that investigations are ongoing, with all cases reported to them and the police.
