Gap Inc. has appointed Justin Breton as its new vice president of development effective 31 August. Reporting directly to Chief Entertainment Officer Pam Kaufman, Breton will oversee content creation and development activities within the company’s vast portfolio.
New Leadership in Content and Entertainment
Breton is tasked with managing the ideation and production of original content in multiple formats across Gap Inc. His appointment is part of the retailer’s ongoing expansion into “fashiontainment”—a strategic integration of fashion with entertainment, as underscored by the company’s CEO, Richard Dickson.
Breton comes to Gap Inc. after a noteworthy six-year tenure at Walmart. There, he spearheaded partnerships, content, and emerging experiences, notably creating the “Camp by Walmart” program, engaging in Roblox commerce, and advancing Walmart’s gaming footprint. His career also includes roles at Condé Nast, Hearst, Squarespace, and Foursquare, with collaborations involving notable figures like LeBron James and Elton John.
Expansion of the Entertainment Division
This new hiring follows the recent strategic additions in Gap Inc.’s entertainment division. Earlier this year, the company brought in Pam Kaufman, formerly of Paramount, as the Chief Entertainment Officer. Under her guidance, Gap Inc. seeks to enhance its presence across various entertainment domains, including gaming, music, and sports.
Additionally, in May, Lourdes Arocho was appointed as the senior vice president and head of licensing. Arocho, another Paramount alumna, is focusing on brand extensions, partnerships, and connections to cultural moments, reinforcing Gap Inc.’s positions in the entertainment and sports arenas.
Strengthening Market Strategies
The company’s commitment to enhancing its customer engagement strategies is further reflected in the hiring of Michael Francis in May. As the chief customer officer at Old Navy and head of marketing shared services, Francis—an esteemed former Walmart executive—brings crucial marketing experience to the Gap Inc. fold.
Economic indicators from Gap Inc.’s Q1 earnings report highlight the company’s growth, with net sales increasing by 1% to $3.5 billion year-over-year and comparable sales rising by 2%. Old Navy’s net sales advanced by 1% to $2 billion. However, challenges remain, as Athleta’s net sales saw a 12% decrease, with a comparable sales decline of 11%.
The company is set to release its Q2 financial results on Thursday, which will provide further insights into its economic position and strategic advancements.
