Renowned game director Hideki Kamiya has expressed a strong interest in reviving the long-abandoned video game Scalebound, initially cancelled by Xbox in 2017. Known for his roles in developing iconic games such as Bayonetta, Resident Evil 2, and Devil May Cry, Kamiya is eager to bring the dragon-centric game back to life.
Kamiya’s Willingness to Collaborate
In a recent interview, Kamiya acknowledged he has not yet approached Xbox CEO Asha Sharma about breathing new life into Scalebound, but he stated he is open to the idea of re-establishing professional ties. “If they want to do it, let’s make it happen!” said Kamiya, indicating a readiness to collaborate on the project again.
Current Developments at Clovers
Kamiya’s new studio, Clovers, where several PlatinumGames alumni now work, is currently focused on developing Okami 2 with Capcom, another sequel eagerly anticipated by fans. Despite this, Kamiya emphasized he remains dedicated to Scalebound: “I still very strongly desire to be able to see through if it’s all possible, and I’m being 100% serious when I say that.”
The Unfinished Journey of Scalebound
Scalebound, which was an Xbox One exclusive, began development in 2014 and garnered significant anticipation due to its unique concept. The game featured a protagonist in headphone-wear accompanied by a massive, chaotic dragon ally. Despite four years of development, Microsoft cancelled the project in 2017. PlatinumGames CEO Atsushi Inaba later acknowledged that the cancellation was a result of both companies’ missteps.
A Hopeful Future
Kamiya remains optimistic about the future, drawing parallels between Scalebound and the revival of Okami. “If you want something strongly enough, you eventually find a way to make it happen,” Kamiya said, expressing hope that Scalebound might one day get another chance, as happened with Okami.
