Sony’s decision to step away from Kojima Productions’ upcoming game “Physint” has led to Xbox taking over publishing responsibilities for the title. Concerns over budget constraints, potential profitability, and exclusivity reportedly influenced Sony’s decision. An interview with Hideo Kojima has provided more insight into the impact of this move on his studio.
Reflections from Kojima on Sony’s Departure
Discussing the situation, Kojima admitted that he was taken aback by Sony’s decision to withdraw its support for “Physint.” Despite his initial shock, he expressed no animosity towards Sony and acknowledged the challenging times in the gaming industry. Kojima highlighted his longstanding relationship with Sony, which spans three decades, and noted the significant changes over recent years.
During an interview with IGN, Kojima confessed to having vague memories of the meeting where Sony communicated their decision, stating, “I don’t remember so much of that meeting.” Nevertheless, he remained appreciative of his past collaborations with key figures at Sony and understood the challenging industry climate.
Xbox to the Rescue
Following Sony’s departure, Xbox stepped in to support the continued development of “Physint.” Kojima praised Xbox for their enthusiastic reception of his project pitch, noting their prior collaboration on another title, “OD,” which helped establish a pre-existing relationship. Xbox’s commitment to supporting the technical aspects of the project was crucial in ensuring its progression.
An Xbox spokesperson affirmed their faith in Kojima Productions, stating, “Betting on Kojima-san is an easy call. We believe in his team’s ability to build triple-A games with groundbreaking, new IP and we believe in OD, Physint, and our growing partnership.”
Kojima Productions’ Official Response
In response to speculation following a Bloomberg article, Kojima Productions released a statement addressing the change in publishing partners. The studio dispelled rumours regarding tensions with PlayStation and highlighted that none of the claims originated from official sources.
“None of the claims written came from any official or on-the-record source… This was a serious situation for the studio with a range of potentially significant implications,” the statement read. “While we recognise that the article may have caused alarm, we want to reassure you all, for the record: that the studio is in a healthy, profitable state, development for Physint continues to move forward with Xbox, and our relationship with PlayStation remains strong.”
The statement aimed to quell concerns among fans and partners, emphasising the studio’s stable position and continued progress with the game.
