India is taking steps to consolidate its diverse and fragmented tourism sector by introducing the National Digital Tourism Stack. The initiative, launched by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), aims to streamline connections among a range of tourism services, including homestays, guides, attractions, and transport providers.
Digital Overhaul for Indian Tourism
The National Digital Tourism Stack is designed to offer travellers an easier way to discover and book services beyond India’s prominent hotels and tour operators. It seeks to address the challenges posed by the current fragmented market, where many smaller businesses rely on inconsistent and disconnected platforms for their operations.
A phased roll-out is set for the initiative, with a pilot phase scheduled for January 2027 and a more extensive launch planned for July 2027. By introducing this digital stack, the government hopes to integrate smaller businesses into a unified system that is more accessible and dependable for both operators and customers.
A Potential Game Changer
If successfully implemented, the digital infrastructure could transform the way tourism services are accessed across India. While prominent airlines, major hotels, and attractions use advanced online systems, many smaller, locally run tourism experiences have not yet made the digital transition. This new initiative aims to bridge that digital divide, providing a more comprehensive and user-friendly platform.
