iPhone Handoff shares one number across two phones

New iPhone Handoff Feature to Enable Single Number for Multiple Devices

With the impending release of iOS 27 this month, Apple is set to introduce a new feature called iPhone Handoff, which will allow users to switch between two iPhones using the same phone number. First mentioned at the WWDC keynote in June, this feature offers the flexibility of using a main device alongside a secondary or “companion” phone.

A demonstration video, running on Xcode 27’s Device Hub, highlights the process for configuring this functionality. The introduction of iPhone Handoff is timely, as Apple prepares to launch its new foldable iPhone Ultra. This capability aims to provide users with the option to switch to a more compact, less costly phone, such as an older iPhone 13, when they do not wish to carry the more cumbersome Ultra model.

The use of iPhone Handoff will depend on the support of network carriers. Preliminary code analysis has indicated references to T-Mobile US and Telekom.de, though it remains uncertain if other carriers will participate.
